Shiplap
Shiplap is a type of wooden paneling with a rabbeted edge, which is a groove cut along the floor and ceiling edges of each plank. This groove allows the planks to overlap deeply so that the fit is very tight, effectively protecting against the elements.
It features perfectly square joints, and its original use was on ships, where its durability and wind-and-water resistance capabilities were extremely important. However, today it is widely used for both exterior cladding and interior decorating.
Builders, suppliers, and homeowners alike keep running into more or less the same issues, e.g., spotting the gaps after the installation, wood swelling and shrinking causing panel movement, the installation taking too long, and coming up with the finish that will still look good years down the line.
